Starting nursery can be a difficult and distressing experience for a child. Leaving old routines and moving into a new environment can naturally cause stress and upset. To combat this, we encourage all parents to speak positively about the transition, encouraging excitement in a child.

Additionally, the first day of nursery for all new and returning children will last one hour. This is done to alleviate any potential separation anxiety and will help to build a child’s confidence and trust. For new and younger children, a smooth transition may take up to two weeks, with the child spending a little longer at the nursery each day. Children returning after the holidays may be a little apprehensive too. This is likely to last around a week whilst they familiarise themselves with their former routine. In any case, it is extremely important not to force or hurry a child whilst they are becoming accustomed. It is essential for a child’s emotional well-being that they feel safe in their surrounding environment and associate it with enjoyment.

One of the core principles of Stepping Stones is to promote a healthy respect for oneself and others. As a result, the nursery has developed a set of rules and regulations for the children, clearly defining the boundaries of appropriate behaviour within the nursery environment. Positive reinforcement is consistently practiced to encourage children to develop wholesome pro-social behaviour. A zero-tolerance policy exists regarding socially unacceptable behaviours such as biting, hitting, scratching, kicking and bullying. If a child is identified as a biter, the teacher and teaching assistant will take responsibility of closely monitoring and observing the child. Parents are asked to inform the nurse should their children require any form of medication. Administration of medications should be personally discussed with the nursery office. The general well-being of each and every child is of paramount importance to Stepping Stones. Therefore, parents are requested to check their children daily before sending them into the nursery.

If your child has any of the symptoms below, please consult a doctor and do not send your child into nursery:

  • A high temperature of 37.8 Celsius or above.
  • Vomiting and/or loose bowel movement.
  • Rashes/spots/blisters or irritations found on any part of the body.
  • Red, swollen eyes or discharge from the eyes, i.e. conjunctivitis.
  • A green runny nose.
  • A bad cough.
  • Vomiting within the last 24 hours.

If you suspect your child has contracted an infectious disease, such as chicken pox, parents are requested to strictly adhere to nursery policy and follow a medical practitioner’s advice.

Parents are requested to notify the nursery as soon as the medical diagnosis has been confirmed.

Please do not bring your child into the nursery environment until all signs of the disease are fully healed. Further guidelines are available from the nursery office.
